Jamie South
Landscape Designer
Background & Experience
My journey with Berns began when I was 16 years old, starting in the garden center before transitioning to the nursery and eventually the landscape team. From those early days, I realized something —I never dreaded going to work. That passion inspired me to pursue a degree in Landscape Architecture and turn my love for outdoor spaces into a lifelong career. My hands-on experience has given me an understanding of how successful projects come together—from the materials we use to the time and effort it takes to create something lasting and beautiful.
Design Approach
Every design starts with listening. I take the client’s vision as my foundation and use my expertise to bring it to life—better than they imagined. My focus is on creating spaces that flow naturally and feel inviting. A well-designed space should feel effortless to move through, offering comfort and beauty in equal measure. My practical knowledge of materials and labor ensures projects are priced competitively while maintaining exceptional quality.
Project Highlights
Some of my most fulfilling work includes both residential and public spaces. Two standouts are Hospice of Dayton and its neighboring property, where I had the opportunity to transform their campuses. With creative freedom and a meaningful budget, we turned their outdoor spaces into places of beauty and peace. One of the most impactful comments I’ve ever received came from a hospice patient who said, "It’s crazy, but I am enjoying my time here because it is so beautiful." Those moments remind me of the transformative power of good design.
Working with Clients
My clients often tell me they chose Berns because I was the only designer who truly listened to them. I find it rewarding to see the moment a client recognizes the value of their investment—when they smile, trust our team, and see their vision come to life. Knowing that I’ve delivered an excellent service and exceeded their expectations is what makes this work so fulfilling.
Skills & Inspiration
I draw inspiration from nature and the beautiful landscapes in public spaces. These experiences help me create designs that bring the tranquility and wonder of the natural world into spaces people can enjoy every day. I’m particularly inspired by the work of Piet Oudolf, a master of perennial garden design. While I may never match his extraordinary vision, his influence shapes my approach to creating spaces that are both beautiful and meaningful.
Advice for Gardeners
To create a space you’ll love, start by defining your goals and understanding your budget. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that sharing a budget means we’ll push its limits. The truth is, when I know your budget, I can maximize every dollar to deliver the best value. With clear goals and open communication, we can create something amazing together.
