Jeff Berns

Owner & Landscape Designer

My Design Approach & Style
My approach begins with truly listening to my clients’ wants and needs. I aim to bring their ideas to life while expanding on their vision to create their cohesive and unique design. Every plan I create is drawn to scale, ensuring that plants have adequate room to grow and thrive, both now and in the future. This attention to detail results in landscapes that are sustainable for years to come.

Background & Experience
I grew up in the garden center production greenhouse business, where my passion for plants and horticulture began. While I knew I wanted to stay in the profession, I also wanted to carve my own path. That led me to pursue a degree in Landscape Horticulture at The Ohio State University. After graduating, I started Berns Landscape 42 years ago and have been creating custom, client-focused designs ever since.

Project Highlights
Some of my favorite projects include designing front foundation landscapes that enhance curb appeal and backyard spaces tailored for family gatherings and entertaining. I take pride in delivering quality landscapes that not only meet my clients’ needs but also exceed their dreams. For me, a successful landscape design is one that feels personal and meaningful to the homeowner.

Working with Clients
When working with clients, I prioritize listening. Each project starts with understanding their unique needs, preferences, and goals. As I work on the design, I regularly refer back to notes and client conversations to ensure every detail aligns with their vision. It’s incredibly rewarding when a client recognizes that their thoughts and ideas have been truly heard and brought to life in their design.

Skills & Inspiration
Every landscape I encounter inspires me. Whether I’m working on a project or simply driving through a neighborhood, I notice the details of notable landscapes and draw inspiration from them. My appreciation for landscapes fuels my creativity and keeps my designs fresh and innovative.

Advice for Gardeners
A great garden starts with a professional design. I encourage clients to come prepared with a list of their favorite plants—it’s a great starting point for understanding their style and the look they want to achieve. This collaborative approach helps create a landscape that feels uniquely theirs while benefiting from professional expertise.
