Spring is slowly emerging, and that means it’s time to start getting ready for gardening. Perhaps you’ve already made your way into the garden to clear out beds and pull overwintered weeds. Or maybe you’re still in the dreaming phase of gardening, imaging perfectly trimmed hedges and beds filled with beautiful blooms.
Whatever your current state, it’s time to get started! Most years, Ohioans can expect the gardening season to last from March to late November — plenty of time to experience the satisfaction of getting your hands dirty and enjoying the fruits of your labors. Expert gardeners know that success isn’t just about what you plant, but where and when you plant.
Berns Garden Center’s knowledgeable staff can help you every step of the way. Whether you’re an old hand or a novice, Berns is bound to have just what you’re looking for in terms of service and locally grown shrubs and flowers.
How does your garden grow?
Berns Garden Center knows how to grow things. Al and Cherie Berns founded Berns Greenhouse and Garden Centers in January 1956. At the time, their one-acre plot of land on Yankee Road held only one greenhouse and a modest home.
Today, Berns is open 360 days a year and is staffed with an army of knowledgeable employees. Each year they grow and test hundreds of plants in their own greenhouses, looking for the varieties that will thrive in the region.
But before you get started, here are a few tips for preparing your garden beds:
- Clean out your garden beds. Get rid of dead leaves and pesky sticks. Make room for perennial regrowth by trimming old blooms and sweeping back mulch.
- Prepare your soil. Mix fresh compost into existing soil so your new flowers and shrubs can get a strong start.
- Prevent weeds and crab grass with a little preemptive treatment. Put down crab grass preventer as soon as you can. Next, lay several layers of mulch to keep weeds at bay.
